Throughout
the Costa del Sol there are a variety of venues to choose from for a
lively night out. From night clubs that stay open to the early parts
of the morning, to boisterous karaoke bars, casinos, clubs,
'Chiringuitos', English pubs, Spanish bars, discos, flamenco shows
and more. Fuengirola, Benalmadena and Torremolinos have a thriving
nightlife for tourists.
More upmarket (and obviously more expensive) are the classy venues

tourist information and facilities to name but a few.

It is famous for the plunging river gorge that divides the medieval from the 18th-century parts of the town. Make your way up the winding, narrow road towards the village and see the white-washed houses arranged in tiers, clinging to the hillside. The road narrows as you enter the village that, despite it's popularity with the tourists, has managed to retain it's Spanish individualism and character. The town council have used the village's charm to it's full and exploited it's attractive character by providing for the thousands of tourists who flock here in the summer. All over the village are view-points and resting places, one of the best being the Muralla Gardens, cleverly designed so that flowers are in bloom all year round. Malaga was founded in around the 8th century by the Phoenicians, who called it Malaga.
It was under the control of the Carthaginians, but it was the Romans who made Malaga into a city.
The Arabs captured it in 711 and following the conquest of the Catholic
Monarchs, reforms were begun to adopt the Arab city to the new Christian
dominance.
Today, Malaga is a modern city, with an important commercial port, airport and
university. Capital of the Coast of the Sun, it is one of the main tourist
regions in the Spanish peninsula and it enjoys an exceptional climate throughout
the year.
Malaga has a lot of monuments, truly works of art, that you must see

born.. what you will find in this city are many unexpected things regardless of
how many pages you visit, these monuments you have to live them and feel them,

It is called the Cathedral of the Incarnation, built in 1528, in the
gothic style above a former Muslim mosque.
Contains almost all the architectural styles from the 16th to the
18th century since a lot of different architects participated in
it's construction.
Still, it maintains an impressive uniformity taking under
consideration that it wasn't completely finished one of the towers
was never completed, for this reason and in an affectionate way,
people in Malaga call their Cathedral " The One-armed ".
In the interior of the Cathedral there are many works of art,
beautiful representations of the Virgin as imagined by great artists
and next door in the Cathedral's Museum this art display is expanded
in a marvellous way.

This fortress located in the mountain of Gibralfaro dominates the
city in a spectacular way, from there you can enjoy views of the
harbour, the cathedral and the bullfighting ring.
It is said that on this hillside there was a lighthouse built by the
Phoenicians, although this fortress was built in the 15th century by
a Muslim King, it is the reason for the name, Mountain of the
Lighthouse.
At the time a passage way surrounded by walls was built that
connected the fortress with the Alcazaba, although it slowly
disappeared since the the castle became the focal defensive point of
the city.

Even though this ring, we have to admit, may not be one of the most
famous bullrings in Spain, it does have it's charm, even if you
don't like bullfights, this plaza is part of the life in Malaga.
Situated in the residential area of the Malagueta and very near
downtown, this ring is not just for bullfights, they also hold
concerts in which very famous artists have performed
Malaga's Seaport
Located right in the heart of the city, Malaga's port has always
been a very important seaport, ever since the Phoenicians arrived on
these shores up until today.
Malaga's port has welcomed ships arriving here from every corner of
the world.
There are three stunningly beautiful turquoise coloured lakes created by a dam that was built across the 200m high Guadalhorce River Gorge
known as "La Garganta El Chorro". The lakes are bordered by pine forests.
Climbing, hiking, mountain biking for the most active, and bird watching, photographing nature, swimming or fishing for the easy
going. Scan the cliffs for eagles and falcons... and don't forget to take picnic!
El Chorro is approximately 45 minutes from Malaga.
The impressive El Chorro Gorge. Cut through the vast limestone cliffs over millennia by the Guadalhorce River is stunning and well worth driving through at the very least.
Famous for its concrete catwalk, which hangs precariously along its length, the Camino del Rey is now in grave disrepair. This is Malaga´s Lake District.
The municipality extends over an ample territory in which there are the great formations of the Malaga relief. To the north of the Arco Calizo Central (the Antequera range), there is a spectacular landscape of the Sierra de Huma (1,191 m.) and the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes (shared with the neighbouring municipalities of Antequera and Ardales).
To the west of the Sierra de Aguas (949 m.) the lands extend to the mountain complex of Serrania de Ronda, with a landscape of pine groves
which goes from the Guadalhorce river to the road which joins Alora with Carratraca.
It
is no longer possible to walk along the "Camino del Rey" (The King's Path), as it has been closed, pending repairs. However it can still be found by driving across the lower dam into the village of El Chorro, take the track on the left before the railway station, continue past the camp site until you can drive no further.
Walk the last few hundred metres.
The path drops down and skirts the iron girder railway bridge.
Care must be taken when crossing the line. The classic Holywood movie, Von Ryans Express was filmed here.
The Costa del Sol is extremely rich in history and tradition. With many Castles, fortifications and buildings of interest throughout. Below are some of the Castles in the Malaga province.
Castillo de Sohail, Fuengirola.
The origins of the town date back as far as the Phoenicians who colonised the area. The Romanscalled the city 'Suel' after a star which can clearly be seen from the castle. In 53 A.D. the town was granted the title of 'Municipality' in the Roman 'Betica' region, which later became Andalusia.
The Roman thermal baths at nearby Torreblanca and the ruins of the ancient Roman highway bear witness to the importance the town acquired during the period. In fact the marble in the monument in 'Plaza de Castilla' in Los Boliches was taken from the remains of the ancient Roman highway.
During the Eighteenth Century the area was conquered by the Moors who renamed the town 'Sojayl' (the likely root of the modern name for the castle - 'Sohail') The City was finally re-conquered by the Catholics.
The castle has become the towns symbol, situated outside the town on a hill it commands an impressive view over Fuengirola and the sea. The castle is most likely of Roman origin although it was restored in the Tenth Century by Abderrajman III under the Moorish reign of Andalusia. Although the castle may be the town's symbol it is probably better known for its 7km of beaches.
'Paseo Marítimo' (beach front promenade). The paseo is a focal point with locals and tourists alike who use the area as a meeting point and to enjoy the sea air. Some of the beaches have been awarded the 'Blue Flag' by the European Community, signifying their cleanliness and the high standard of services provided. Along the beaches you will find 'Chiringuitos' - a mix between a beach bar and a seafood restaurant. On the menu you will find a host of different fish and seafood dishes, including many local specialities. There are special areas designated for Windsurfing, beach volleyball and other water sports Fuengirola Marinais home to some impressive yachts and leisure craft, while not of the same scale as Puerto Banus in Marbella, it is a relaxing stroll were you can enjoy seeing the fishing boats going out to sea. Tuesday is market day El Mercadillo is open in the morning, it is the biggest outdoor market on the coast and attracts visitors from nearby resorts as well as the locals. It is well worth going down to browse at the wide range of wares for sale, from fake designer clothes and watches to more traditional Andalusian produce. Mijas Costa is home to many of the areas ex-patriot population, composed mainly of British, Germans and Scandinavians. Everyday life continues on in Fuengirola and the fisherman still go out to sea, reminding one of the small fishing village it once was. |

Castillo de Sabinillas / Castillo de la DuquesaProvince: Malaga The 18 Century fortress of Castillo de la Duquesa stands on the coast in the middle of what was once a large Roman fishing village. It has been suggested that the village may have been called Saltum in classical times, but no definite Latin name has survived. The castle itself was built in 1767 by Francisco Paulino of Seville. As a reward to his industry and his services to the castle builders, who found work hard to come by at that time. The Spanish King Carlos III granted Paulino the command of a company of cavalry. |
Castillo de la Estrella / Castillo de TebaProvince: Malaga This was declared a building of Historic-Artistic Interest in 1931. Built on the 600-metre high Hill of La Estrella, from which it gets its name, the castle dominates the surrounding countryside and the northern approaches to the Ronda Mountains, and was evidently of great strategic importance in its time. It covers an area of approximately 25,000 square metres, making it one of the biggest castles in the province of Malaga. It was built in two walled areas, with 18 towers in total. Throughout history it has been occupied by different peoples, and has undergone a certain amount of restoration in the past. |
